B.F. Day Elementary School & PTSA Quick Guide
Welcome to B.F. Day! We hope this resource helps you get your calendar plan and feel ready for the weeks and months ahead. As parents and caregivers who enjoyed the first days of school here a few years ago or just last fall, we are glad to share our tips and welcome you to “The Family School”! Refer to the 2-page Guide on the PTSA website.
Please visit the B.F. Day PTSA Website to stay up to date on events and B.F. Day news. The B.F. Day PTSA website is a source of information for resources in our community recommended by our counselor. It’s also a good way to learn more about B.F. Day lingo and how to volunteer. Go Sun Dragons!
Parent/Caregiver Checklist
We know there is a lot of information out there! Below are the top 8 things that you can do to get connected and set yourself and your student up for success in these initial weeks.
- Join the PTSA
- Become a member to participate in debate and vote.
- Subscribe to the newsletter.
- Subscribe to the B.F. Day SPS Calendar which included PTSA events.
- Join the B.F. Day WhatsApp group to connect with other families.
- Sign up yearly using the QR Codes classrooms or on the PTSA Website for PTSA & Classroom communication. B.F. Day Teachers can’t share your contact information, you must opt-in to get communications from other parents & PTSA.
- Read the Dayette (sent via email every Friday)
- Mark your student’s belongings with a sharpie including clothing and lunchboxes.
- Attend a PTSA General Assembly Meeting. There are 3 each year and the first one is in October.
- Attend Curriculum Night and your student’s Parent-Teacher conference in November.
- Complete the SPS Volunteer requirements, see below.

- These are classroom-specific announcements sent by the Room Parent volunteers collaborating with your student’s teacher and the B.F. Day PTSA.

How to Get Involved at B.F. Day
Volunteer Information
Submit a Volunteer Form on the PTSA Website to share your interest, talents, and availability. We will connect you with opportunities and resources to share your time. Note that to volunteer in-person at school and on field trips you must submit an application for a background check and complete an online training.
- In Your Child’s Classroom: Room Parents and Co-Room Parents build a community around your child’s teacher and classroom. Some classes also need reading and math support.
- Around BF. Day: Volunteers in the lunchroom or on the playground can make a huge difference early in the early school year as students and staff are settling into routines.
- From Home, by supporting event planning, communications and website updates, community outreach, and data entry projects.
- Supporting School & PTSA Events, like Winter Wonderland, Science Fair, ArtFest, Move-a-Thon, Arty Party, and Field Day with planning, set-up, or clean-up.
SPS School Year Dates 2026-27
- The first day of school for grades 1-12 is Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026
- The first day of school for preschool and kindergarten is Tuesday, Sept, 2026
Key Dates for 2026-27
- Sept. 2 First day of school for 1st-12th grade students. Sept. 2 is not an early release Wednesday. Early release will occur every Wednesday except for the first week of school.
- Sept. 2-4 Preschool and Kindergarten Family Connections
- Sept. 7 Labor Day (no school)
- Sept. 8 First day of school for preschool and kindergarten students
- Oct. 9 State In-service Day (no school for students)
- Nov. 11 Veterans Day Observed (no school)
- Nov. 23-25 Family-Teacher conference days in elementary and K-8 schools. (No school for most elementary and K-8 schools, varies by school. Most middle schools are open.)
- Nov. 26-27 Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day (no school)
- Dec. 18 1-hour early dismissal
- Dec. 21, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 Winter break (no school)
- Jan. 18 Martin Luther King Jr. Day (no school)
- Jan. 28 Day between semesters (no school)
- Feb. 15-19 Mid-winter break, including Presidents Day (no school)
- April 12-16 Spring break (no school)
- May 31 Memorial Day (no school)
- June 18 Juneteenth observed (staff holiday, no school)
- June 21 Last day of school (1-hour early dismissal)
Potential emergency closure makeup days are June 22, 23, 2027.
