Chronic Tardies

There is an increase in students arriving after 7:55. Attendance is taken at 8:00 a.m. After 8:00, a student is marked absent. When students check in late, a tardy is considered 5 or more minutes late to school. Instruction begins no later than 8:00 a.m. It is disruptive to your child’s education when they arrive late. It is also disruptive to the classroom routine when children arrive late. Tardy students require teachers to repeat previously taught information or slow down the delivery of morning instruction for the rest of the group.

On May 18th there were 51 tardies in K-5. That’s about 13% of our K-5 students.

On May 19th were 36 tardies in K-5. That’s about just about 10% of our K-5 students.

Please be on time for school. We take pride in our lesson planning and preparation, and it’s imperative that your child is here on time to access the instruction. Arrive at your morning line spot at 7:50 so your child can enter the building with his/her class by 7:55.

New Multilingual Teacher

Welcome, Brooke Dawson! Ms. Dawson comes to us from Queen Anne Elementary where she recently taught intervention with the virtual program. Ms. Dawson will primarily be teaching our multilingual students. She will also be providing small group instructional support for Kindergarten classrooms, for about 1-2 hours per day. She’ll be working full-time next year. The focus of her work is literacy. We are excited to have her join the B.F. Day family!

Below is a brief introduction:

Hello everybody, my name is Brooke Dawson and I am so excited to join the community at B.F. Day! I went to college at Western Washington University and graduated with my degree in Language, Literacy, and Cultural Studies in Elementary Education. This past year I have been working at Queen Anne Elementary VOPP as the Academic Interventionist. I love teaching because I am always so inspired by my students and their joy in being a kid.

I’ve lived in Washington my whole life and wouldn’t want it any other way (though a little less rain would be nice). When I am not teaching you can find me reading, taking walks, and trying out new places to eat! I have a cat named Mitzi who I love dearly, even though she is always on the lookout for trouble. A fun fact about me is that I can recite the alphabet backwards! I’m thankful to be welcomed to B.F. Day. Please feel free to reach out and connect with me as I am so excited to get to know you all.

Community Event

We would like to invite all our families who identify as single parent households, kinship care families, and/or nontraditional families to a community-building/social gathering on Saturday, May 21st at 2pm at Ross Park. This is a PTSA sponsored event with the purpose of making space for all families in our community and acknowledging how hard the last few years have been for everyone, particularly nontraditional families. All families deserve a strong support system in our community. Join us to continue the work of creating this opportunity.

Please join us for a kids’ playdate, refreshments, and the chance to get to know some other nontraditional families at B.F. Day. If you have any questions, contact Kathleen, PTSA Equity Chair, at kathleendriscoll2000@yahoo.com

Welcome to the PTSA
