    Newest staff members

We had completed hiring for the three vacant positions we have! Pictures and their introductory statements are coming soon.

Already announced was Ms. Abby Kinder, who will teach 1st grade in Room 304. (Ms. Hill will move to 3rd grade and teach in Room 306.) Abby comes from Lawton Elementary.

Ms. Deborah deRaat will be our new Pre-School Special Education teacher. She will replace
Ms. Yarger as Laurie moves to the Southwest US. Deborah currently works at Lowell Elementary.

Ms. Erika Engelhardt will be our new Resource Room Special Education Assistant. She comes from View Ridge Elementary. This position is currently vacant, and Erika will be starting here on May 13th.

All other positions begin in the fall.

Physical Education Bike Unit starts Thursday!

The Cascade Bicycle Club will deliver bikes for 3rd thru 5th grade classes today. You will likely notice the trailer they come in parked on the upper playground. We ask that children not climb on or under the trailer even when school is closed.

The first day of bike safety will be Thursday, May 2 and the last day is Monday, May 20.
The upper playground will be utilized those days from 9:00 to 10:20 every day except Wednesdays. For safety all other students, recess will be on the lower playground during these times. On two Wednesdays (May 8 and 15) the MMS students will bike from 9:15 – 9:40.

3rd through 5th grade students who wish to bring their bikes from home may do so ONLY if they have a secure lock to protect their bikes outside. We have seen unlocked bikes stolen from campus. Bringing a personal helmet is also allowed—please have their name on the helmet. We will have plenty of bikes and helmets, so it’s not required to bring them from home.

    Class Placement Assignments

At our recent Building Leadership Team meeting on April 4th, our team revised the procedures for making our class list assignments for next year. We have always worked to create balanced classrooms, so that the experiences that students receive in any homeroom are consistent and equitable. Due to very deliberate and strategic hiring, I am confident that every student will have a strong academic learning environment. We are supporting social emotional needs, as well, and our team will continue to receive professional development in Positive Discipline and RULER techniques.

At times, parents ask about providing input into class placement decisions. The BLT and I invite your insights about helpful information that teachers can take into account – peer matches that may not be positive for your child, engagement strategies you use at home, strengths and areas of need.

We request that no specific teacher requests be included in your letter or email.
This is because our teachers feel they are part of a team where all staff are advocates for students and what is best for them.

As staff begin creating class lists, they will be creating lists with no teacher identified. They will balance classes with students on a continuum from high academic and behavioral needs to leaders in the classroom. Once class lists are created, they will be delivered to the office for the summer. Stan and Carrie will review any changes in enrollment over the summer.

In August, updated lists will be presented to the new grade teachers by the current teachers. At that time, the specific teacher assignments will be made.

The class lists are announced at the Ice Cream Social at the end of August.

I am happy to discuss this policy with you in more detail. Kindly submit any information by May 7th, as we will begin the class list planning on May 8th.

At this time, here is how our school is scheduled to be organized

    2 - Pre-school classes
    4 - Kindergarten classes
    3 - 1st grade classes
    2 - 2nd grade classes
    3 - 3rd grade classes
3 - Mini Middle School classes – all 4/5 configurations

Please help us by letting us know, as you know if you are not returning to B. F. Day next year. Simply send an email to cbauer@seattleschools.org or call the office at 206-252-6010. There is 24/7 voice mail if you’d like to leave a message.

Last chance to order Your Yearbook!

We have received many orders. Order forms should be turned in to the school office. Orders are due no later than this Friday, May 3, 2019.

    Spring Testing

Students in Grades 3 – 5 will be participating in Spring Testing. All Grade 3 – 5 students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English/Language Arts and Math. In addition, 5th grade students will take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment in Science (WCAS).The Smarter Balanced Assessments have 2 parts for the English Language Arts and Math. There is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and a Performance Task (PT). We have reserved 3 testing periods of about 90 minutes each for each portion of the test. Since these are not timed, students may take longer. Most students finish after 2 – 3 days.

    Here is the summary

Grade ELA (2 tests: CAT and PT) Math (2 tests CAT and PT) Science (1 test)

Thank You Staff Appreciation WeekB.F. Day is celebrating our teachers and staff during May 6 - 10, 2019.

Love is our school's theme for this week. If you have not yet heard from your room parent about your class's plan to celebrate your student's teacher, please follow up with your room parent. Parents are also encouraged to ask their students to create individual cards for their teachers, bring in homemade goodies, crafts, as well as donating gift cards and other gifts. These activities and items are all voluntary of course, but are a beautiful way to honor our teachers.

If you would like to volunteer during this week to make staff feel appreciated, we need your help!

Please see the opportunities and sign up genius links below:

    - Breakfast and coffee are being provided for staff every morning by parent volunteers in the staff lounge during May 6-10. Volunteers are particularly needed to sign up to help make coffee in the mornings.  View the Breakfast and Coffee Sign Up Genius.

    - Teacher massages will be held on Monday, May 6 from 10am until 1pm. Volunteers are needed to help coordinate getting teachers to their 10 minute massage appointments and possibly helping to watch classes if they've booked an appointment during class time.  View the Coordinate Teacher Massages Sign Up.

    - Plants for Staff. Volunteers have committed to bring in about half of the plants needed for our staff members (52 total plants are needed). Please take a moment to sign up to bring in a plant for a staff member at B.F. Day. Volunteers are also needed on Monday, May 6 to get plants to intended recipients.   View the Plants for Staff Sign Up.
