    PRINCIPAL NEWS

April 2nd will be the correct day that progress reports will go home. In last week’s Dayette calendar, I was a week off! Sorry for any confusion. I know I stressed out staff with that announcement!

April 4th – 9:00 – 9:45 – Our new Superintendent, Denise Juneau, will be here at BF Day to tour our school. She has scheduled school visits all through the year, and it is our turn to highlight all the wonderful things that we do here. I’m planning to have a couple parents, students and staff join me in a walkthrough. If you’re around, please say hello.

April 17th – 7:00 – 8:30 – Please join me for some coffee at the start of the day. The Pilgrim Coffeehouse truck will be in north parking lot. This is my way of saying thank you to parents and staff for all your support during the recent passing of my mother. April 17th will be the anniversary of her 91st birthday, so I think this will be a great way to honor her memory and continue her love of friends and family gatherings.

    What's Coming Up

As an FYI, we are beginning the interview process for next year’s open positions! I’ve said many times that I consider the recruitment and selection of high-quality staff to be one of the most critical aspects of my role as Principal. We will be hiring for a new homeroom teacher – a first grade teacher, and a new Pre-school Special Education Teacher. Laurie Yarger and her family will be relocating to the southwest this summer. We will have a new SpEd assistant to hire, as well. Nathaniel (Woody) Frank will be resigning to complete his student teaching experience. I am happy to announce that all other BFDay teachers and staff are returning next year! I’ll keep you posted on the hiring as selections are made.

Response to KING 5 Investigative Report Last week, two Town Hall meetings were held to discuss SpEd programs and the Policies and Procedures related to isolation and restraint. The meetings were attended by about 30 parents and minutes were shared in the Dayette last Tuesday. The meetings were positive and yielded good questions and feedback.

I continue to work with our district SpEd team and our staff to ensure we have a safe learning environment for all students and to think of ways to improve the services we provide. We are focusing on getting clarification around some parent questions that were raised – in particular around isolation incidents that were reported to OSPI. Since we don’t do isolation at our school, we are checking into how these were coded into our district reporting system. We are also looking into ways to make the first-floor areas used by the Social Emotional Learning students more appealing and comfortable. Several good ideas were raised, and we will be following up shortly. As always, please reach out with questions!

Spring Classroom Pictures April 4 All classrooms will have their pictures taken together on the morning of April 4. If you would like a copy and/or would like a spring portrait be sure to look for the flyer and envelope that are going home today. Either pre-pay online or send form back to your child’s homeroom teacher no later than April 4 so they know if you are buying photos.

PreK Sign Up Now Available Quality, affordable, preschool is available through the Seattle PreSchool Program. We have two such programs (rooms) here at B. F. Day this year. Day webpage and click on the preschool art there. It will take you right to the site for application.

    Sundragon Ultimate Frisbee
Did you know B.F. Day has an Ultimate Frisbee team? B.F. Day Sun Dragons team is made up of 4th & 5th grades lead by Coach David Iannotti and Admin Alysa Reid, both are B.F. Day parents. This is their 2nd year and they are off to a great start with a 2-1 record. They practice every Wednesday and have games most Saturday’s in March and April. Their next game is this Saturday March 30th at 1:30p.m. against McDonald Disc Jockeys at Magnuson Park #1C. Feel free to come and cheer along with this fun team. Watch the Dayette for the dates and times of upcoming games.

    Lost & Found
Please check the Lost & Found before it goes to charity on April 8, the beginning of spring break. Please stop by to check for lost items frequently. Coats, lunches, water bottles, hats, gloves, etc. are turned in every day. The Lost & Found is located just inside the northeast entrance door.

    Next Year Planning
Please help us by letting us know, as you know if you are not returning to B. F. Day next year. Simply send an email to cbauer@seattleschools.org or call the office at 206-252-6010. There is 24/7 voice mail if you’d like to leave a message.

    B. F. Day Green Team
The B. F. Day Green Team is growing strong! We are now a full class of amazing workers. Yesterday we added bee attractors to the Friendship Circle in front of our building. The Green Team has decided to speak at next Monday’s assembly about what we’re doing and how everyone can help our environment and school grow. Unfortunately, one of our pea gardens was destroyed sometime last Friday. All our starts were either pulled out or broken. While a little sad and disappointed we are looking at this as a learning opportunity.

    Spring Testing

Students in Grades 3 – 5 will be participating in Spring Testing a week after we return from Spring Break. All Grade 3 – 5 students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English/Language Arts and Math. In addition, 5th grade students will take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment in Science (WCAS). The Smarter Balanced Assessments have 2 parts for the English Language Arts and Math. There is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and a Performance Task (PT). We have reserved 3 testing periods of about 90 minutes each for each portion of the test. Since these are not timed, students may take longer. Most students finish after 2 – 3 days.

    Here is the summary:

Grade ELA (2 tests: CAT and PT) Math (2 tests CAT and PT) Science (1 test)
    3 4/29-5/3 and 5/9-5/13 5/16-5/20 and 5/24-5/29 NA
    4 4/22-4/26 and 5/6-5/10 5/21-5/23 and 5/30-6/3 NA
    5 4/22-4/26 and 5/6-5/10 5/21-5/23 and 5/30-6/3 5/14 or 5/15

    VOLUNTEER NEEDS

This is a work from home volunteer opportunity that involves both online research and contacting businesses or individuals for more information about funding opportunities for B.F. Day.

Fremont Solstice Parade Parking Volunteers - A team of volunteers are needed to help with parade parking on the B.F. Day playground and collect parking fees during the Fremont Solstice Parade on the morning of Saturday, June 22, 2019. This is a great fundraiser for the school and all volunteers will still be able to march in the parade.
