    Laptop/iPad Returns

We are planning the method and schedule for collecting student laptops, iPads, keyboards and chargers by the end of the school year. This is a Department of Technology Department requirement so that technology can be re-imaged over the summer.

Students in summer school can keep their device until that program is over.

We expect to collect in 2 different ways. In-person students will be collected:

    Pre K and K – Monday, June 7th
    1st – Tuesday, June 8th
    2nd/3rd – Thursday, June 10th
    4th/5th – Friday, June 11th

Remote only students will be collected from 9 – 3 on Tuesday, June 15th, Thursday, June 17th. We will make calls for anything not returned for a final collection on Friday, June 18th.

There is a form each family will complete. Mr. Hammer, Ms. Sawyer, and Ms. Zisko and I will assist with the in-person collection by coming to classrooms with a cart and reviewing what students have with them. Parents will be key to getting things returned on the correct day, with completed paperwork, so please be on the look-out for additional information next week.

Teachers will plan out how remote learning will run without technology. Learning packets are the likely choice for those final remote days.

    Next Year Plans

If you plan to have your child attend a private or parochial school next year or are moving out of our district, please help us by letting us know. As you know you are not returning to B. F. Day next year simply send an email to or call the office at 206-252-6010. There is 24/7 voice mail if you’d like to call. We appreciate all the emails and calls we have received to date.

    Promotion 2020-2021

This year our 5th grade Promotion will once again be virtual. It will take place on June 17 at 5:00 p.m. Details to be announced soon.

    New Staff Next Year

Mr. Schlichting and Mr. Peterson are retiring at the end of the school year. Only one of those positions will be filled next year, due to budget and enrollment in our SEL programs. We will move a current Access staff member, Claire McCallum, to join Ms. Gildemaster in SEL.

We would like to welcome a new Sped I.A., Sydney Farrar as an Access Room assistant. She comes to us from Chief Sealth High School. Sydney is currently studying for her teaching certificate though UW.

We are also very pleased to announce that we have a well-respected counselor, Daniel Turner, joining us the first few months of school to cover Mr. Taylor’s role in Social Skills classes and counseling. Mr. Turner will be with us through mid-November while Mr. Taylor is on paternity leave.

Ms. DeRaadt will be transitioning from Pre-school to the Access Program next year. We will interview for the pre-school special education teacher next week.

Mrs. Cooper will be resigning her Access position in order to be at home and better support her family.

Wear your Mask at School, Get Immunized!

    - Don’t ditch the mask yet! Even though the CDC has said that people who are fully vaccinated may now safely choose to not wear their mask in many indoor and outdoor settings, everyone must adhere to local regulations. At Seattle Public Schools, all staff and students must continue to wear a mask while at school – both on the playground and inside the school at all times. Updated SPS info here.

    - Everyone ages 12 and up are now eligible to get a vaccine! Click here if you have an SPS student who is age 12 and older to find a clinic at their K-8, Middle or High School. At some locations, adults can get vaccinated too.

    - Are you an adult who is ready to get vaccinated? The lines are short and it’s easy to get a COVID-19 shot. Follow the link here for the City of Seattle vaccination sites at Rainier Beach, Lumen Field or in West Seattle

Don’t Forget the Helmet and Life Jacket!

Summer is just around the corner and that means kids are out and having fun. And while we are all so excited to see kids moving and having fun after a long COVID winter, let’s make sure they stay safe!

Tips for Fitting a Bike Helmet

    - Eyes / Helmet Position – Your helmet should sit level on your head and low on your forehead – one or two finger widths above your eyebrows.
    - Ears / Side Straps - Adjust the slider on both side straps to form a V-shape under and slightly in front of each ear.
    - Mouth / Final Fit - Does your helmet fit right? Open your mouth wide...big yawn! The helmet should pull down on the head.

    - More tips here are on fitting your child’s helmet or life jacket. Also info on free helmet and life jacket giveaways through Children’s Hospital this summer!
